Siobhan O'Sullivan, a dedicated animal activist and Melbourne University academic, has just published her book Animals, Equality and Democracy. It would be excellent to see a copy of this groundbreaking book in every local, school and university library in the country.
The book is a fascinating look at the way in which animals are treated differently under the law depending on how visible they are to humans, with many examples and hypothetical situations explored. A dog or cat, for example, is protected from cruelty by a multitude of state laws if he or she is a companion animal but in a laboratory has hardly any protection whatsoever.
Professor Peter Singer (author of Animal Liberation) said that, "O'Sullivan appeals to democratic values to argue that the way we treat many animals is unjustifiable, even when judged by the standards that citizens of most democracies already accept ".
Then please contact officials at your municipal and/or school or university library and ask them to buy a copy or two of the book so that it is publicly accessible.
Published by Palgrave Macmillan.
